Starting Over!

Every part of farming has its ups and downs, and some of those become personal, which is the case with my farm. After 5 years of turning an urban backyard into a working farm setting I lost it all with no warning, and so I stepped back for awhile, I reassessed what I was doing and where I wanted to go. I even left for awhile to Tennessee, back home, thinking maybe I’d take up farming there, but after a few weeks it just wasn’t meant to be. So I came back to South Bend, I bought a house even closer to the Farmer’s Market, and still a 1/4 acre, and more determined than ever to learn from my past farming mistakes.

Urban farming has become a passion of mine, I truly believe that the future of our food supply will need to be much more focused on what’s near by then what is shipped in. There is something truly special about growing in the city, bio-intensively, it creates excitement with your neighbors, with the community, and it ignites something in others to do the same, even if that’s just planting a garden for the first time. Doing this has also allowed me to overcome some of my fears, public speaking, a class I basically failed at in high school. But now, getting up in front of others, talking about farming, gardening, answering questions, it’s just helped me become a better farmer because I try and learn more everyday so I can help others. So I think I’ll stick around a little longer, I think I’ll keep doing this, because I love it, and I love being able to share it with all of you.

So if you’re wondering, I’ll be back to the market Thursday, September 6th. I’ll have a few varieties of pickles, a bit of produce, breads and pie, microgreens and possibly a few other surprises. I’ve seen a few of you over the course of the last month while working at a few booths on Saturday and I can’t thank you enough for your support, and words of encouragement. Being at the market, and meeting people so like minded and passionate about food is just another reason why I keep doing this. Thank you so much to everyone, I can’t wait to see you all behind my own booth!
